Ok guys. Here is your textbook. This is where all your homework will be coming from, so if I where you I would make this my new best friend!!! I will assign parts of the book for you to read in your lessons. Thank you! ~Professor Silvers~
Chapter One:
Ravenclaw
In the times of lords and serfs, there once was a wife of a rich lord. Her name was Rowena Ravenclaw. She was magical, she knew it. But fortunately, her husband did know. If he was angered, especially about a petty lie, one would not want to be near him. Luckily, he was magical. Rowena was the smartest of the pair. She and the lord could hardly compare. The lord was a bumbling idiot. Rowena wanted to have children, but without magical abilities in the prejudiced, Muggle world.
Rowena and the lord had eight children. All had magical abilities.
Soon after their eigth, the lord died of unknown causes. (Though many would say he ran into a door a bit too hard.) He had left everything to Rowena. His castle, estate and riches. Quickly, the maiden checked all of the serfs for magical abilities. It just so happened that the estate was chock full of wizards and witches. Rowena quickly separted the magical folk from the non-magical, and headed over to the nearest estate.
She and the lord of that estate were quite good friends. Rowena persuaded a serf trade. She would trade all of her non-magic folk for an equal amount of his magical folk. Quickly, she picked out the best wizards and witches and moved back into her estate.
Rowena saw the untapped power of all the wizard-serfs. She knew she could teach their children, as long as they were a young enough age. She quickly renovated some rooms of the castle into classrooms, teaching the young sons and daughters of serfs as best to her abilities. She also taught the older serfs in 'night-classes'. Her estate became very prosperous. The serfs used magic to help grown corn and other foods.
With prosperity came more wizarding children. Soon the woman was overwhelmed. She needed help. But before seeking help fo someone she THOUGHT was a wizard, but wasn't sure of, she needed to perfect a spell she was developing. The Memory Charm. And finally, she did. But the quality of life of her estate was dwindling... she couldn't keep up with the flow of students. Rowena left her eldest son in charge, and went on a quest for help.
She met up with a brave knight. Godric Gryffindor.
Chapter Two:
Gryffindor
Godric Gryffindor was a brave knight from Scotland. He honored the most frivolous rule of chivalry without a second thought. He charged bravely into battle, sword drawn. His renown in battle was so great, he had inhereted the kingdom of a king without any heirs. This meant he, the brave knight, was in control of all the lord, vassals, and serfs of the area. He was single, though got his rewards for saving maidens in distress (wink.gif).
Soon after inhereting the kingdom, Godric was approached by an unknown woman who introduced herself as Rowena Ravenclaw. They became acquainted and Rowena explained her predicament.
She wanted to educate all of the wizards in Britain someday. Starting with her husband's own estate, she began by teaching her own magical serfs. But the properity that magic had brought became to much for the lone witch. She needed another leader, another teacher. Gryffindor was intrigued by this story. He liked the idea behind it. After a few days of thought, he agreed. He also gave up the largest and remotest castle in his entire kingdom. He separated all of the magical and non-magical people, bringing the magical ones to the large castle. Then he sold off the rest of the serfs and his land.
Soon, after an epic journey, Ravenclaw and her serfs moved in. The grown serfs farmed and provided for everyone while the younger serfs learned spell after spell after spell. Soon, the estate had grown prosperous and very self sufficient. The wizard-serfs kept making more baby wizard-serfs. Some had the occasional non-magical baby, but they were allowed to stay. But once again, there was a teacher shortage. Ravenclaw left her sons and daughters with Gryffindor and departed again. She would meet a very rich lord named Slytherin.
Chapter Three
Slytherin
Salazar Slytherin was a very, very rich wizard. He understood the importancy of secrecy from non-magical folk. Who knew what they would do? He didn't own an estate. He sold his off and took the money and traveled. He traveled to France, Germany, Russia. But he was resting in London when Rowena came upon him. Most of his history is unavailable.
Slytherin was an old friend of Gryffindor's. Gryffindor was extremely loyal to Slytherin, even though Slytherin was not his lord. When they had another teacher crisis, Slytherin pooped into Gryffindor's head. Of course... the wizard had an aptitue for just about every subject. Especially Potions.
When Ravenclaw explained the situtaion to Slytherin, he storked his beard thoughtfully and said he'd get back to her. She stay in a tavern for a few days before approaching him again. She mentioned that she had left Godric back with her children and the students. She pressed for a decision... she needed to get back.
At the mention of Gryffindor, Slytherin finally gave in. He donated his money to the Hogwarts safe, and began to teach. The teacher crisis was solved yet again. When Slytherin joined the crew, students learned assortments of spells, astronomy, and potions.
Soon enough, however, the students began to overwhelm the teachers yet again.
Chapter Four:
Hufflepuff
However, this time the three teachers didn't have to go beyond their own castle. Rowena saw another young woman. She was of the Hufflepuffs, a long line of wizarding serfs who had been with Rowena and her ancestors, well, as long as anybody could remeber.
When Helga Hufflepuff was a student, she was good at every subject. She always did above average work, and in some classes, outstanding. Rowena saw that Hufflepuff would be a major asset to the school. Quickly, Helga was called up to become a teacher. Eagarly, she accepted. And together, the four teachers accepted more students.
Eventually, they had to hire more, less powerful teachers to keep up with the flow of students. This was the way things work for centuries. Until what many wizards and witches today call the Magical Schism1.
1- Modified from the churches 'Great Schism' in 1054, when the Roman Catholics split from the Eatern Orthodox.
Chapter Five:
THE MAGICAL SCHISM
Everyone disagrees every once in a while. It's human nature. We all have different opinions. Of course, the Founders were no exception.
Rowena Ravenclaw always selected the brightest children. She always saw herself in them, and she wanted to educate them to the most of their abilities. Which, in her opinion, were the highest of all the students entering their school. She didn't care if they were born to non-magical parents or if they were purebloods.
Godric Gryffindor took the bravest of the bunch. He wanted his students to become like him. Charging face-first into danger. He wanted to enhance their magical abilites so that they could best fight the evil doers of the world. Such as black knights, evil kings, and dark wizards. She didn't care if they were born to non-magical parents or if they were purebloods.
Salazar Slytherin took in only the cunning and ambitious. He didn't care about bravery or smarts. He wanted the ruthless, the power-hungry. Like the other founders, he wanted the children most resmbling him. And that included taking in only purebloods.
Helga Hufflepuff wanted hard-working, loyal children. She wanted children to understand that no matter your blood or your wealth, hard work and loyalty will get you places. She used herself as a prime example. Remember, she was of the loyal line of Hufflepuff serfs to the Ravenclaw lords.
You can see the conflicting interests. This didn't keep the founders apart. In fact, it strengthened the school. Every magical child in Britain was eventually allowed in. And each founder got what they wanted, avoiding getting what they didn't. But everybody also gets old.
The founders were approaching the time in their lives when they could no longer teach or choose for heir ouses. Helga was deathly ill with consumption1. The others were nearing the age where most wizards died back then. They had to do something.
Gryffindor suggested letting teachers they appointed choose who goes to which 'house'. The 'houses' would be named after the original founders. Each 'house' would have a head, who was in charge of disciplining all the students in the 'house'. Slytherin immediately rejected. He liked the house idea, but not letting somebody else choose. He did NOT want any half-bloods or Muggle-borns in his house. This set off the fued between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Gryffindor didn't care what Slytherin wanted, especially if he was going to be prejudiced. So Slytherin marched off and built what is known today as the Chamber of Secrets2.
Eventually, Slytherin was approached by the other founders. They said that he was right. They didn't want their houses getting intermixed. So Gryffindor took his imfamous hat off of his head. The founder gave the hat a brain, and enchanted him to separte the students into the four houses. Thus, the Sorting Hat was born!
Almost immediately afterwards, Hufflepuff died. Followed by Gryffindor and Slytherin, who never made up. And Rowena was the last one to go. It seemed almost fitting, since she was the one who started the school.
1- A disease where the person coughs up blood.
2- The Chamber of Secrets was opened by Harry Potter in Spring of 1993. Possibly opened by the unknown3 heir of Slytherin previously.
3- Unknown to the compilers of the book.
Chapter Six:
THE CASTLE & GROUNDS
We now know the origin of the castle's name. But what about the castle itself? And what about the grounds surrounding it? It all begins by travieling from the town of Hogsmeade up a dirt path towards the castle. You approach tall stone pillars with winged boars atop of them. Rising into the sky, you see an ancient castle. Hogwarts.
The castle is very old, and made of grey stone. It has seven large floors, and some dungeons. Also, the castle includes four tall towers. The different floors are divided into closets, storage rooms, classes, offices and house common rooms and dormitories. Inside, the walls and corridors are adorned by suits of armour and moving paintings.
On the grounds of the castle are a large lake and an even larger and dense forest. Unknown to Gryffindor's lord, the forest and lake had always been inhabited by magical creatures like grindylows, centaurs, thestrals, and merpeople. In fact the forest has been deemed too dangerous for the students. Which might be why it is referred to today as the 'Forbidden Forest'. Inside of the Forbidden Forest, you'd be keen to find flocks of birds, a herd of thestrals, a clan of centaurs, and many unicorns, big and small.
The lake is very vast. It's natural and spring fed, inhabited by many a diverse creature. On the bottom, you can find a settlement of merfolk. Beware of the weeds, however, they may be holding grindylows. Also in the lake is the imfamous giant squid. Occasionally, he'll flop a tentacle or help a student who'd fallen in. In the spring months after exams, student cool off in the large lake.
The castle has an anti-apparation spell around it. Thus, nobody can Apparate or Disapparate into or out of the school. There are many other spells that surround the Hogwarts castle, warding off unwanted foes.
Chapter Seven:
HEADMASTERS & HEADMISTRESSES
We've already established that once the four founders passed away, they left some teachers in charge. The also left one person in charge of all of the other teachers. He was Bryan Baldershins, the first Headmaster of Hogwarts. Each time a Headmaster or Headmistress passed on, they were replaced by the Deputy Headmaster/Headmistress.
